Understanding cholesterol (in simple terms):
HDL (good cholesterol):
Reverse Cholesterol Transport (RCT): This is the most important function of HDL. It circulates in the blood, collects extra cholesterol from tissues and artery walls, and transports it back to the liver. The liver processes the extra cholesterol and removes it from the body through bile.
Although LDL has relatively important properties, for example, it helps in the formation of a healthy cell membrane. Too much of it is a bad thing. It causes plaque formation in arteries, as shown in the picture above. This results in blood clots, heart problems, etc. Try to keep it as low as possible.
Triglycerides:
Basically the energy storage. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. These are stored in fat cells throughout your body as an energy reserve.
ApoB (Apolipoprotein B):
ApoB is the primary structural protein found on the surface of every bad cholesterol particle. ApoB measures the number of particles circulating in your blood.
Lipid transport: It is a vehicle used to transport triglycerides and cholesterol from the liver and intestines to the cells in the rest of your body.
Why ApoB is a better marker for cardiovascular health than LDL-C. One Particle-One Protein: Every single bad particle whether it is LDL, VLDL, or IDL, only has one molecule of ApoB. By measuring ApoB, you get an exact count of the bad particles.
What happens when these markers are bad?:
- Plaque formation (check LDL and ApoB)
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Many undesirable health conditions
You do not feel bad cholesterol until it's too late. Make sure to get your bloodwork done to see if you are healthy.
Now how do we fix bad cholesterol?:
Lifestyle changes:
- Minimize or cut out trans/saturated fats
- Cardio
- Sleep
- Lowered cortisol
Supplements:
- High quality fish oils, 6g daily
- Citrus bergamot, 1200mg daily
- NAC, 1200mg daily
- Tudca, 1200mg daily (liver health and lipid health are complimentary)
- Milk thistle, 1000mg
- Injectable glutathione, 700-1200mg weekly
- Melatonin, 40mg pre bed
Medication:
- Ezetimbe, 10mg daily
- Statins, 10mg
- Cardarine (controversial), 10-20mg
- Nebivolol, 5mg
- Telmisartan, dose dependent on blood pressure
- Eplerenone, 50mg
**Do NOT stack all the medication immediately. Take one by one to adjust doses.**
Note:
On gear your HDL is most likely going to tank. Your main focus should mainly be lowering HDL.
