new update: it has been about 2 weeks since I made the announcement that I was going to start heel smashing. I hit the heel of my foot with a plank 20 reps each side hanging from a pull-up bar with weight leg swings. I will try other "cope" methods, but I did just wake up with a growth spurt. I might have been overdue, but who knows? Anyway, keep experimenting.
