He broke my nose when i tried to get infront of him when he was about to hit my mother and grab her by the hair, he hasn't done it often or in my presence to this day after that he probably does it behind closed doors which im a bit worried about

Yeah I fought him many times especially in recent times. When I was younger,like 12-14 I couldn’t do shit but the older I got I realized I can overpower him because of general height and other things so I started fighting back. I usually ended up with just a few scratches,sometimes deeper wounds but all that matters is that I wasn’t the one on the ground this time. And there’s many and many times my dad actually tried attacking me with a knife,trick basically keep kicking away so he didn’t get in a close enough proximity.
