a huge cope is thinking every millimeter of width is a skeletal gain, most of what you see is just dentoalveolar compensation. since the adult palate suture is zippered shut your teeth will always move before your bone does, if you arent using bone borne force, your just giving yourself buccal tipping(tilting the crowns of your teeth outward). it will give the illusion of a wider smile, but your actual maxilla hasnt moved a fraction of a millimeter its just cope

most people think the palate is the only thing holding the maxilla together, but really its at the back of your skull. you have two vertical bones called the pterygoid plates locking your maxilla in place, when you try to expand using soft methods like your tounge or a retainer your simply arent providing enough force you actually move the bone. this is why adults usually need MSE, the little micro implants do give enough force to actually move the bone against the pterygoid anchors. without it your just playing with your teeth but your skull staying still.

if you want to be a weirdo and call out a fake progress post for whatever reason look for the diastema (the gap between your teeth) true skeletal expansion using MSE or MARPE forces the two halves of the maxilla apart, which almost always creates a temporary gap between the front two teeth. if someone claims that they have progress but they dont have that gap and instead their teeth are facing forward they have achived zero bone growth.
