you knew it was coming for months. the date on the calendar just sitting there. you'd look at it sometimes and it didn't feel real. then one day it did.
last few weeks you start noticing things.
the way your street looks at 7pm. the specific smell of your house. the route you could walk blindfolded. you never paid attention before. now you cant stop.
your brain is trying to save it all. like it knows.
last night. your bed. your actual bed. the one that knows the shape of you.
you don't sleep much.
airport is too bright and too loud for what it actually is. people moving everywhere. nobody looks like they're leaving forever. just tuesday morning at departures.
you check your bag about four times.
the flight is normal. that's the weird part. few hours. snack. movie you don't watch. and then you land somewhere completely different and that's just. it. that's the whole thing.
norway in january the sun rises at 9 and its gone by 3.
nobody tells you what that does to you. six hours of pale grey light and then dark. every day. you come out of a lecture and its already night and something in your chest just. drops a little.
where you're from the sun outstays its welcome. here it barely visits.
the streets are quiet in a way that feels personal. like the city isn't ignoring you it's just. not built for noise. people walk fast and don't make eye contact and it isn't rude it's just how it is but you don't know that yet so the first few weeks you think everyone hates you.
they don't. they're just cold. everyone is just cold.
your room is warm though. that's the thing about norway. outside is brutal but inside is always warm. candles everywhere. thick blankets. the norwegians figured something out about being cosy as a survival mechanism.
you sit by the window with something hot and watch the snow fall under the streetlight.
it's beautiful in a way that makes you a bit sad.
you video call home. behind the screen its warm and loud and familiar. someone's watching tv in the background. the sound of it almost gets you.
your mum asks if you're eating. you say yeah.
you don't tell her about the 3pm darkness thing. she'd worry.
