Let's imagine that you're talking to someone, you realize that their story isn't adding up when you try to connect the dots. However, you aren't sure whether they truly are saying the objective thing or they are LYING.
Today, we'll be discussing about COGNITIVE LOAD by Aldert Vrij, and how his research answers our question.
Vrij’s research showed that lying is mentally harder than telling the truth. When people lie, their brain handles more load — creating the story, hiding the truth, and staying consistent.
That extra effort leaks out through behaviour.
The MANEUVER-----
His Cognitive Load Detection method increases mental pressure to expose
inconsistencies:
1) Ask them to repeat the story in reverse.
What to do: “Tell me what happened, but start from the end.”
Example: If they said “I went to the shop met a friend came home,” ask them to go backward.
Why it works: Truth is stored as memory
easy to reverse. Lies are created
harder to reconstruct.
2) Add an unexpected question while they talk-
Ask something they didn’t prepare for.
Why it works: Liars remember main events, not random details.
Overall, we could say that liars tend to say the main points of the story wherein they have "memorized" what to say and what not to say.
Use this tactics whenever you feel like someone is telling BS.
Thank you for reading.
